Transcendental Visions: Ko Si-Chi's Art Works
Ko Si-chi is a pioneer of modern photography in Taiwan. In 1961, Ko Si-chi, who just graduated from the Tokyo College of Photography, returned to Taiwan with a spirit influenced by the economic recovery in Japan following World War II and the Japanese avant-garde movement at that time. Taiwan was still a very closed society, but Ko Si-chi's works were already attuned to global art trends. While location photography and documentary photography were what were popular in Taiwan at that time, Ko Si-chi poured his heart into exploring and pursuing his individual photography style.
Ko Si-chi was born in Tainan in 1929. After graduating from Kaohsiung Polytechnic Institute in 1947, he went to study at the Tokyo College of Photography in 1959, where he studied under the tutelage of Japanese photographer Shigemori Koen,. In 1962, Ko held his first solo exhibition at the NewsTaiwan Gallery in Kaohsiung. His work Blind Mother received recognition from Mr. Koo Hsien-liang, a prominent modern art pioneer in Taiwan. In 1968, Ko went to the United States to further his career and opened up his photography studio in New York City in 1971. He was active in commercial and fashion photography till 1979. After that, he shut down his studio, left New York, and embarked on a self-imposed exile to Europe, North Africa, and China for his personal artistic realization. Ko's commercial photography career in New York enabled him to visualize his thoughts into images, no matter in what kind of environment. His interesting life journey of ups and downs also fostered his unique style, especially his full-spectrum photography works created when traveling in Europe and Africa. These works left a lasting, profound influence on the development of photography in Taiwan.
This time, the "Mindscape" exhibition curated by the Tainan Art Museum is the first-ever large-scale solo exhibition held for Ko Si-chi in his hometown of Tainan. This exhibition starts from the context of photography and presents the stylistic construction and photographic expression of Ko's works at different stages. The four themes include "Starting with Silver Halide", "Fixed Images", "Mind Images", and "Images over Time and Space." These works span across his entire career, from early inception, the establishment of his aesthetic style, his realistic portrait photography, to his most iconic works created in Europe and North Africa, including the most celebrated dye transfer works. In addition to his photographic works, this exhibition also provides a glimpse into the photographer's creative life and artistic process by showcasing many of his work items, like various types of negative prints, daily life photos, cameras, and other documents and materials.
Looking at Ko Si-chi's works throughout his life, we can clearly see how he used photography as his artistic medium to interpret different subject matters. We can also appreciate the perfect inner landscapes that Ko explored in art, be it the dye transfer works, studio portraits, and landscape documentation of mountains and valleys. He had such a strong personal style that makes his works so distinguishable. By providing a clear understanding of Ko's artistic context, we hope our visitors, with eyes like a shutter, can capture in their heart the images and artworks of Ko, and thus deepen familiarity with this outstanding Taiwanese artist.
